Edgeware Optimizes Cloud DVR Delivery

New cloud DVR recording and delivery enhancements add to company’s content delivery and origin acceleration solutions

London – March 18, 2014 – TV Connect Stand 73 – Edgeware, the technology leader in distributed video delivery, today announced enhancements to its Distributed Video Delivery Network (D-VDN) and Origin Acceleration solutions through the addition of its new Orbit Unified Server and Convoy Management Software. The latest versions include substantial ingest performance increases through enhanced clustering of recording servers and a new, optimized file system for much faster storage retrieval and management of adaptive bit rate (ABR) recordings.

Pay-TV consumers expect the ability to pause, start-over and record programs, but the cost of supplying and maintaining home digital video recorders (DVRs) is becoming prohibitive. Therefore, a new breed of services is emerging: Cloud DVR and Catchup TV. Rather than every user making his or her own recordings, copies are made in the network and streamed to the subscribers on demand. Expensive home DVR set top boxes are replaced with ‘thin’ software clients running on CI+ cards or even software apps on connected TVs or gaming consoles. To enable this, service providers’ content delivery networks (CDNs) and headends must be able to simultaneously and faultlessly record and deliver thousands of programs to millions of consumers.

Edgeware’s latest D-VDN Solution enables service providers to efficiently record directly onto the CDN. The Edgeware Origin Accelerator Solution enables optimized recording in centralized or distributed headends for delivery to alternative, third-party CDNs. Recordings in both solutions can now be load balanced across multiple Edgeware Orbit 3020 or 3080 servers with N+N redundancy, giving access to thousands of simultaneous recordings. As the same servers are also used for delivery, they can be deployed in a hierarchy to improve caching efficiency. For example, the last 48 hours of content can be recorded directly onto servers in distributed hubs, with the last seven days recorded in the headends to minimize cache misses. Older DVR recordings are off-loaded to low cost, network attached storage (NAS) archives.

As a single ABR recording can consists of multiple index files and many thousands of content files, writing and reading these at scale to low cost commodity NAS devices presents real performance challenge. Edgeware’s D-VDN and Origin Acceleration solutions now include a new file system that archives these recordings into single, large file making writing and retrieving much less processor intensive and producing much higher throughput.

“Cloud catchup and DVR services are emerging as the killer app for service providers with valuable live programming,” said Jon Haley, vice president, marketing and business development at Edgeware. “Recording and delivering these services efficiently requires a highly optimized solution such as those provided in our latest releases.”

Edgeware Consolidates Video Delivery with Unified Caching and Software Defined Networking

New version of D-VDN Solution includes unified caching to legacy and new device types with cloud-based control and management

London – March 18, 2014 – TV Connect Stand 73 – Edgeware, the technology leader in distributed video delivery, today announced availability of a new version of the Edgeware Distributed Video Delivery Network (D-VDN) Solution. The latest release provides consolidated delivery of existing and on-demand services to both legacy set top boxes (STBs) and new multiscreen devices through the new Orbit Unified Server Software, The D-VDN now also includes the latest version of Edgeware’s Convoy Management Software, which enables operators to build their own content delivery networks (CDNs) using a software defined networking (SDN) approach.

Most cable and telecom operators have a large install base of STBs connected via legacy networks, such as QAM tuners. Rather than building duplicate, siloed delivery networks for existing and new, on-demand services to these devices and the latest multiscreen clients on broadband networks, Edgeware’s latest D-VDN Solution enables consolidation to a single, unified delivery network. Servers and control software can record, cache and deliver content to both device types.

At TV Connect, Edgeware is demoing the Orbit Unified Server Software running on two hardware platforms. In addition to Edgeware’s existing Orbit 3020 hardware platform, this includes Edgeware’s latest Orbit 3080 platform, providing up to 80Gbps aggregate throughput per rack unit to both networks from a single set of caching servers. Edgeware’s Convoy Software provides all control and management for both delivery types from a single, virtualized application running in a shared data-center or private cloud. By creating a centralized, logical view of all network resources, this SDN architecture enables operators to dynamically provision capacity and to optimize video session routing for the highest-possible quality of experience (QoE) regardless of any rapid change in the mix of video services. A key example for prioritizing is live streaming to premium sports customers.

“Service providers can’t afford to duplicate their delivery networks as they strive to offer compelling, on-demand services at increasingly competitive prices,” said Jon Haley, vice president, marketing and business development at Edgeware. “Our new unified solution means they can consolidate this infrastructure and dynamically provision it with software.”

Cortado’s ThinPrint 10 Frees Branch Offices From Print Servers

New ThinShare technology eliminates branch office print servers and reduces associated costs

(BERLIN/DENVER, March 04, 2014) Cortado, the world’s leading expert on printer virtualization with its ThinPrint solution, now enables consolidation of costly print servers with its new ThinShare technology. ThinPrint Engine 10, which includes ThinShare, is the first solution to ensure compression rates of up to 98 percent for all printing scenarios. This includes printing from a physical desktop to a central print server. By reducing the amounts of data while providing the highest level of performance with ThinPrint, print servers in branch offices can now be eliminated.

More and more companies are attempting to centralize their servers. The advantages are obvious: IT expertise needs only be concentrated in one location and the savings from hardware, operational costs and licenses are substantial. However, it has been extremely difficult to eliminate print servers in branch offices. The reason being that when printing from local applications in branch offices, huge amounts of data must be transferred from desktops to the print server at the headquarters. The consequences are slow printing, lower application performance levels and increased network instability. This results in a significant lack of user acceptance and ultimately, a failure in centralizing print servers.

A remedy is now available thanks to the ThinShare technology included in Cortado’s new ThinPrint Engine 10. With ThinShare, print data is compressed by up to 98 percent directly from the desktop and right through to the central print server. This is even possible without software being installed on the desktops, making the solution both easy and quick to implement. Compression of data returned from the central print server has already been possible with previous ThinPrint versions. The same applies for the fastest printing speeds guaranteed by features such as SpeedCache and the streaming of print jobs. With this combination, print servers can now easily be eliminated from branch offices. Enterprises save not only on hardware, but also on licensing, operating and personal costs associated with the decentralized management of infrastructure.

“With ThinShare, ThinPrint generates significant cost savings as well as enormous improvements in terms of network stability, flexibility and management,” said Thorsten Hesse, product manager ThinPrint at Cortado. “Because we now compress over the entire print process, it is irrelevant whether print jobs are initiated from a remote application at the headquarters, a hosted special application in a branch office or locally from your PC. Hardware and IT expertise is no longer necessary for smooth printing in branch offices.”

User licenses for ThinPrint Engine 10 are available from just $18.85. A free 30-day demo is available at: www.thinprint.com/10-demo

Cortado Simplifies ThinPrint Licensing Model for Channel Partners and Customers

Cortado makes work for ThinPrint channel partners easier with solely user-based licenses and a clearer product policy

(Berlin/Denver, 28 February 2014) Cortado, globally leading expert for print optimization with its solution ThinPrint, has fundamentally revised its licensing model with the new ThinPrint version 10. Cortado now requires only user-based licenses for the ThinPrint Engine. Server licenses have been phased out and Cortado’s Host Integration Service, Print Management Center, and Connected Gateway have been integrated into the premium version. This restructuring has made quote preparation radically more simple for channel partners. In addition to standard and premium licenses, an annual, user-based rental model is offered too. Additionally an annual, user-based rental model is offered. Most important, the benefits of ThinPrint can now be enjoyed in any environment without additional costs. Thus, users who have only used ThinPrint in their terminal server session can now enjoy the benefits of the V-Layer with their local Windows, too.

“With our new licensing model, we are significantly simplifying the work for our channel partners. All they need to know for their quote is the number of users, whether our premium functions are needed, and whether the customer wants to buy or rent,” said Dirk Löwenberg, sales director at Cortado. “This allows our partners to complete their projects faster and more efficiently.”

In addition to the licensing model, license management has also been greatly simplified. In the new ThinPrint Engine 10, all licenses are activated and managed conveniently through a central license server. Thanks to a clearly laid out HTML5 management console, IT officers have all important license information at their fingertips anytime and anywhere – whether it’s the number of currently assigned or free licenses or upcoming expiration dates for licenses.

Another benefit of the new licensing for ThinPrint customers is that they can use as many servers as they like without affecting the price of the ThinPrint licensing and without the added effort of managing licenses.

The ThinPrint Engine 10 is now available. User licenses start at $18.85.

More information about the new licensing model is available in a flyer at www.thinprint.com/licensing

ThinPrint 10: Virtual Printing Meets Physical Desktops

New version optimizes printing for all network infrastructures, regardless of equipment

(BERLIN/DENVER, February 26, 2014) Cortado, the leading provider of solutions for virtual, mobile, and client printing, today extends the benefits of its ThinPrint line to all employees in enterprises with the launch of ThinPrint Engine 10. With its new ThinShare technology, users with physical desktops such as PCs and laptops can now benefit from compression and standardized printing, regardless if via Wi-Fi or in branch offices. Cortado also responded to the increased importance of Macs in the enterprise with a native Mac client. Furthermore, version 10 combines the stability of a solution with 15 years of experience with numerous other improvements and innovative features, such as its own font management and a centralized license server.

The overcomplicated use of different printers, as well as slow and incorrect printing are a nuisance for everyone involved. Employees are interrupted in their work and IT spends too much time dealing with decentralized administration of printing environments and printer drivers. The resulting costs for a company are often immense.

ThinPrint, with more than 20,000 customers in over 116 countries, has been an essential player in print management for many years. This includes Citrix, VMware and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services environments. ThinPrint Engine 10 extends the range of scenarios to physical desktops with local applications and reliably supports IT departments, users and enterprises in all potential scenarios and environment sizes.

A major innovation in version 10 is Cortado’s ThinShare technology, which ensures that print jobs are fully compressed without any additional software installation required. A virtual driver, the ThinPrint Output Gateway, is used to keep desktops free from printer drivers. In addition, employees benefit from a uniform GUI for all printers, regardless of manufacturer. This includes the most popular add-on features, such as hole-punching or binding. As a result, cost savings arise from the reduced burden on helpdesks and user productivity increases. For additional cost savings, IT can centrally preset default low-cost printer settings, such as black & white and duplex printing.

Print job tracking and comprehensive reporting is also included for the IT department in order to further optimize the printer environment. For example, the print load can be better distributed among existing printers in the company. In addition to the proved and patented ThinPrint features, a new font management ensures even greater performance and quality of printing results. No longer are entire fonts, often with 22-25 MB of data, transferred. Instead, just the individual characters that are actually needed for the specific print job are transmitted.

ThinShare can also be used to pursue print server consolidation. Thanks to ThinShare’s ability to provide the highest-possible levels of compression, print jobs can be efficiently handled via central print servers rather than directly at branch offices. Also, when printing via the Wi-Fi network, print data is reduced by up to 98 percent. This is a major solution for such a common cause of bottlenecks in many organizations.

“ThinPrint Engine 10 is a real milestone. As the leading solution in the field of virtual printing, we are pleased that our 15 years of experience now benefit users of physical desktops, including those working with laptops in Wi-Fi networks,” said Thorsten Hesse, product manager ThinPrint, at Cortado. “Introducing standardized printing with its immense cost-saving potential, without turning the IT environment on its head or installing software on individual machines, is particularly beneficial for our existing customers as well as entirely new customer groups.”

ThinPrint Engine 10 comes with a new, simple licensing model that offers completely user-based licensing. Annual user licenses are also available in addition to premium versions including enhanced components such as the ThinPrint Management Center, Host Integration Service and Connected Gateway. User licenses are available from just $18.85.

ThinPrint Engine 10 can be downloaded and tested for 30 days with no obligation at: www.thinprint.com/10-demo

Cortado Launches ThinShare to Free Up Wi-Fi Capacity

New ThinPrint technology solves bandwidth problems when printing

(DENVER, February 20, 2014) Cortado, developer of the leading virtual printing solution, ThinPrint, announces its groundbreaking new ThinShare technology that uses up to 98 percent less bandwidth when printing on Wi-Fi networks. Companies can take advantage of this feature with Cortado’s ThinPrint Engine 10, due to be released at the end of February.

Today, virtually every business relies on Wi-Fi. The more users logging on via their laptops, tablets or smartphones, the greater the risk of bandwidth bottlenecks. Aside from transmitting files, the greatest challenge facing bandwidth is printing. Since the file size of a print job is often a multiple of the original, available bandwidth is significantly reduced. For example, when printing a 1 MB PDF file, a print file size of up to 50 MB may be generated. As a result, all processes dependent on Wi-Fi run slower and are prone to instability, limiting productivity for all employees involved.

The solution to this widespread problem is finally available with the new ThinPrint Engine 10. The ThinShare technology developed with the new version compresses all print jobs transmitted via Wi-Fi to the print server. Print data is reduced by up to 98 percent, ultimately allowing a more stable, efficient and robust Wi-Fi network. More users can work simultaneously in the network without encountering the common issues associated with limited bandwidth.

“With ThinShare, administrators can solve all their bandwidth problems in their Wi-Fi networks for less than $20 per user. Additional bandwidth, routers or restrictions for users are not necessary,” said Thorsten Hesse, product manager ThinPrint at Cortado, “This is just one of countless innovative features and technologies that we are implementing with the new ThinPrint Engine 10.”

Further advantages for office printing available with the ThinPrint Engine 10 include: a common print dialog making printing easier than ever for users and reducing the burden on help desk staff. Centralized driver management ensures that all PCs are kept free of printer drivers. This allows printer properties to be centrally managed and adjusted enabling default duplex printing. Furthermore, printing activities can be evaluated thanks to tracking features.

ThinPrint Engine 10 will be released at the end of February 2014. Annual user licenses are available from just $18.85.

About Cortado

Cortado – formerly ThinPrint – has delivered solutions for the modern working world since 1999. Enterprise mobility, printing, virtualization and BYOD are the main focus of the company. Cortado combines innovative devices such as smartphones and tablets with the customary requirements of office work, in teams and beyond space and system boundaries.

Easy for users, innovative, reliable, and with a high return on investment. These are the distinguishing features of Cortado products. No other company focuses so much on the issue of consumerization. By constantly evaluating feedback from users of its free cloud services available in all major app stores, Cortado continuously improves its products. These foundations allow Cortado to optimally implement an enterprise mobility strategy for businesses of all sizes.

Cortado established itself internationally with ThinPrint, the leading printer virtualization technology, which is used in 116 countries by thousands of companies. Even the biggest customers of Citrix XenApp and Microsoft Remote Desktop Services rely on ThinPrint. Via a long-term OEM partnership, VMware integrates ThinPrint technology.

The advantages of printer virtualization will only increase, also for cloud providers and in networks with physical desktops. Results are significant cost savings, immensely reduced helpdesk requests and noticeably more satisfied employees.

Over 20,000 enterprise customers with 5 up to 150,000 employees, as well as hundreds of thousands of individual users worldwide rely on Cortado solutions. As an internationally operating company, and founder of the Cloud Printing Alliance, Cortado employs over 220 highly skilled employees at its headquarters in Berlin, Germany and in its branch offices in the United States, the UK, Australia, France and Japan. Cortado was a winner of the 2013 Great Place to Work® competition and is named as one of the “Best Employers in Berlin-Brandenburg 2013”.
