The APOLAN Introduces New Membership Level and Encourages Enterprises to Adopt Passive Optical LAN at BICSI Fall Conference 2014

The Association to discuss the unique benefits of the fiber-based technology, which include significant cost and energy savings

ANAHEIM, Calif. – September 29, 2014 – BICSI Fall Conference & Exhibition booth #334 – The Association for Passive Optical LAN (APOLAN), a non-profit organization that is driving adoption and educating the market about the advantages of passive optical local area network (LAN), today at the 2014 BICSI Fall Conference & Exhibition introduced a bronze membership level to further expand its membership base across the industry. Furthermore, the APOLAN has recognized enterprises’ need for a high-bandwidth, high-performance and cost-effective networking solution. At this year’s show, the association is promoting passive optical LAN and its benefits as the ideal solution to future-proofing enterprise LANs.

Fiber-based passive optical LAN is the next generation of enterprise LAN infrastructure. It provides the simplicity, scale and bandwidth to address current and future needs, while minimizing the need for costly and disruptive cabling and equipment upgrades. It delivers up front capital savings and ongoing operational savings over traditional copper-based active Ethernet LAN.

Passive optical LAN is also the more sustainable alternative to copper-based LANs, delivering significant energy savings. It is the optimized means to deliver voice, video, data, wireless access, security and high-performance building automation. Passive optical LAN is used across a variety of industries, including the federal government and commercial enterprise, such as healthcare facilities, schools and college campuses, and hotels and resorts.

“More and more enterprises are realizing that their existing copper-based LANs simply can’t keep up with the needs of modern IT, costing them time, money and resources,” said Dave Cunningham, president of the APOLAN. “It’s critical that we continue to educate enterprises about the technology’s unique benefits to ensure they make the most strategic and beneficial LAN choices to tackle their evolving IT needs.”

The newly announced bronze membership targets organizations with 1-10 employees that are engaged in the design, development, manufacturing, distribution, sale and installation of passive optical LAN or are otherwise supportive of the implementation of such networks. As bronze members, they will be able to access the APOLAN website and existing resources, in addition to making their own content available to other members and the industry.

The APOLAN is available to meet at the BICSI Fall Conference & Exhibition, taking place September 28 – October 2 in Anaheim, California. In addition to the member companies and the APOLAN’s executives, also available will be Gov. George Allen, former Virginia Governor and U.S. Senator who joined the APOLAN as ambassador in August 2014.

About The Association for Passive Optical LAN (APOLAN)

Broadband Technology Report: Alpha Powers Up for Expo

Alpha Demos XM360 Maintenance Management System at Expo

Alpha Technologies, worldwide power solutions leader, will provide on-site demos of its XM360 Maintenance Management System to the North American market at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Denver, CO. The innovative XM360 program is designed to extract power supply service data and generate real-time diagnostic reports to save costs and enhance network upgrade planning for the Outside Plant network.

“XM360 is the first full-featured, web-enabled network maintenance management solution for the broadband industry,” said VP of Strategic Platforms, Jim Heidenreich. “With over 595,000 standby power systems in North America approaching their end of useful life, XM360 will be a valuable asset for Outside Plant technicians and network operators alike.”

XM360 delivers a streamlined solution to preventative maintenance management using a three-tiered approach:

1. The windows-based X-Tractor software allows field service personnel to electronically collect critical network information on power supply, transponder and battery inventories.

2. Standardized, certified preventative maintenance reports are generated and uploaded to a secure database.

3. The web-based Executive Reports Suite analyzes information, gives high-level reports on the status of the Outside Plant network and performs a thorough risk analysis, allowing operators to target network infrastructure investments for maximum return.

Using XM360, operators can remotely monitor aging power systems and proactively deploy repair personnel to pre-empt Outside Plant power failures. In addition, the standardized approach holds maintenance technicians and contractors independently accountable for each report.

“Currently, network operators have limited visibility on the outcome of preventative maintenance visits, and the information documented by maintenance technicians is sometimes inaccurate, incomplete and even illegible,” said Heidenreich. “The XM360 platform greatly reduces the margin of error associated with preventative maintenance reports and provides MSO’s the tools to take appropriate replacement action before costly outages occur.”

Live demonstrations of XM360 and other Alpha solutions will be shown in Booth 855 at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo, the cable telecommunications engineering show of the year, September 23-25, 2014 in Denver, CO. Cable-Tec hosts 10,000 attendees annually and provides the opportunity to learn first-hand about the latest in cable telecommunications technology, products and services.
