Fraunhofer Digital Cinema Alliance Presents Technologies for Spatial Movie Production at IBC 2014

As part of the Spatial-AV project, the Alliance’s latest technologies offer more creativity and better value

ERLANGEN, GERMANY, September 9, 2014 – The Fraunhofer Digital Cinema Alliance, leading provider of future-oriented solutions for an enhanced digital media and digital cinema workflow, will be demonstrating its latest technologies at IBC 2014, stand 8.B80, as a result of the completion of its Spatial-AV project. This project is the Alliance’s initiative to automate the procedures of 3D production and provide intelligent, modular, multi-sensory recording and production systems for immersive audio-visual media.

“Today, special effects are in high demand, and even more so if they’re in 3D. However, in the case of 3D films, this increases the complexity and drives up the production costs, which are already high to begin with,” said Dr. Siegfried Foessel, spokesperson for the Fraunhofer Digital Cinema Alliance. “The goal of our Spatial-AV project was to remove these barriers and create more opportunities for creativity – for both 2D and 3D productions and for both picture and sound, in order to enhance high-quality digital media experiences for the viewers.”

At IBC 2014, Fraunhofer will be presenting the following new technologies:

  • Automated camera systems make 3D productions easy

3D productions are complex and costly as the cameraman must operate and focus two cameras and the angle of inclination and the distance between the cameras must also be adjusted constantly. The Alliance’s latest software enables the second camera to automatically adopt the focus setting of the first camera and ensures that the cameras adjust to one another in an optimum manner.

  • Light-field technology creates virtual cameras

For more complex effects, the Alliance developed a unique, software-based system for light-field acquisition, comprising of 16 cameras. The system utilizes an easy-to-use user interface and intelligent data processing. This eliminates expensive and time-consuming on-location retakes, and enables creative work and calculation of light-field data, such as change in sharpness, change of the perspective, 3D effects or camera travel in all spatial directions.

  • Sound goes 3D

Unless a viewer is seated in the middle of the movie theater, the spatial sound effect using the traditional channel-based method is less than perfect. The Alliance’s wave field synthesis, an object-based method realized for the first time, ensures that everyone in the audience hears 3D sound, no matter where they are.

  • OmniCam transforms viewers’ TV experiences

Recently used with the Vienna Philharmonic and the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ production of the final match, OmniCam360 enables a panoramic view of the stadium and the stands during live broadcasts. It comprises of ten cameras, doesn’t require complex calibration and is no larger than a normal television camera.

IBC attendees can experience these demonstrations at the Fraunhofer Digital Cinema Alliance booth 8.B80. Further information is available at: http://www.dcinema.fraunhofer.de/en/.

Net Insight Sees Self-Provisioning As Future for Modern Media Networks

Company to discuss how self-provisioning offers innovative way for service providers to differentiate network services for broadcasters

STOCKHOLM – September 8, 2014 – At IBC 2014 Net Insight, a leading provider of efficient and scalable transport solutions for media, IP and broadcast networks, will discuss how broadcasters can self-provision media transport services in a service provider network without the involvement of the operator, increasing service reliability and eliminating human error. In addition, through self-provision services, the company will show how service providers can expand their portfolio and provide more flexible and dynamic services to its broadcaster customers, offering pay-per-minute pricing with immediate cost control.

In today’s competitive landscape service providers strive to offer video services with greater flexibility to customers, resulting in faster deployments and dynamic activation of new services. This increased network complexity drives the demand for improved end-to-end manageability, which requires more intuitive network management solutions. With customer self-provisioning, broadcasters can simplify workflows for occasional use by utilizing service provider networks to transport media traffic whenever needed, while preserving high-end media service requirements, including low packet loss, jitter and wander. Furthermore it gives broadcasters full control of the transmission costs in real time.

As self-provisioning of video services is introduced on demand bandwidth will increase, enabling service providers to operate network capacities more efficiently. By handing over the provisioning of services to customers, service providers can radically cut operating expenses.

“Our self-provisioning solution is the only offering that allows for full automation of on-demand network services over existing legacy IP networks, while maintaining the service quality expected by the broadcast industry,” says Thomas Wahlund, manager business development at Net Insight. “The Nimbra platform is being recognized by service providers for significantly simplifying network operations, while reducing staffing requirements and allowing for better asset utilization which results in cost savings when deploying and configuring new services.”

To find out more about how broadcasters and service providers can benefit from introducing customer self-provisioning in media networks, as well as discuss how Net Insight’s solutions enhance QoS, improve efficiency and optimize networks in general, visit the company’s stand at IBC 2014 (#1.B40).

Net Insight Launches 8K Solution at IBC 2014

Company’s Media Switch Routers (MSRs) enable transport of 8K UHDTV signals over IP infrastructure

STOCKHOLM – Net Insight, a leading developer of efficient and scalable transport solutions for media, IP and broadcast networks, today announces it will debut its 8K media transport solution at IBC 2014, which takes place September 12-16 in Amsterdam.

Today’s service provider infrastructures, which are based on one-gigabit Ethernet (GE) and 10GE connections, limit broadcasters to non-linear workflows and file-based distribution, effectively excluding them from live ultra high-definition contribution. Net Insight has previously illustrated how broadcasters can begin migrating to 4K ultra high-definition (UHD) transport over commonly available 1GE and 10GE connections using the company’s Nimbra 600 MSR series and JPEG2000.  With wider adoption of 4K, broadcasters are now switching their attention to 8K, as they seek to bring more value-added services and higher quality content to customers. But in order to meet the demands of customers, they need to be able to transport live UHD content in a cost-efficient way.

At IBC 2104, Net Insight will demonstrate how the company’s Nimbra solution enables 8K signals to be split up and sent over multiple links, such as GE links, offering broadcasters and service providers the opportunity to transport UHD content without the need to upgrade infrastructure, drastically saving them time and money.

Net Insight will also highlight its solution’s market-leading quality and lossless compression, in addition to its completely hitless 1+1 protection switching, which ensures perfect video delivery, even in the event of network or equipment failure.

At IBC 2007, Net Insight pioneered and demonstrated the worlds’ first multicast of uncompressed 4K video streams over a public transport network, which was honored with a “Best of IBC 2007” award.

“Net Insight continues to provide innovative solutions meeting service providers and broadcasters current and future needs,” says Martin Karlsson, vice president product portfolio at Net Insight. “By the end of 2014, Net Insight will not only be able to deliver 8K transport to the broadcast community, but do it in a cost-effective manner over existing IP infrastructure avoiding costly rip-and-replace implementations.”

To discuss how broadcasters and service providers can efficiently transport both 4K and 8K UHD media content, as well as find out more about how the company’s solutions enhance QoS, improve efficiency and optimize networks, visit the company’s stand at IBC 2014 (#1.B40).
