Unifying Standards for Media Streaming Across Multiple Devices
The rapidly growing market for media streaming is throwing up many challenges for operators and content owners to deliver OTT TV across multiple application and streaming, particularly with content owners currently having to produce and store identical content in a slightly different formats.
A milestone has been reached in finding a solution following the recent meeting of the Motion Picture Expert Group (MPEG) where a specification for the Common Media Application Format (CMAF) was agreed.
The new CMAF specification will eliminate that effort and at the same time improve overall interoperability and efficiency for content delivery networks (CDNs) with the ultimate result that viewers will enjoy an OTT even better experience.
The move to the new CMAF standard is anticipated to be swift as evidenced by leading industry players, including Edgeware, announcing support for the new format. You can read more here.
Cortado: Smartphone to Productivity Tool in Just 90 Seconds
Cortado Corporate Server enables complete, automated integration of Apple mobile devices into the corporate network
(DENVER, June 22 2016) – Cortado Mobile Solutions, provider of the enterprise mobility solution Cortado Corporate Server, today announces that its new version 8.0 FR 1 now supports Apple’s Device Enrollment Program (DEP). This makes it possible to automatically integrate iOS devices into the corporate network in only 90 seconds. Unlike other solutions, Cortado Corporate Server also automatically provides access to corporate resources, such as file access and the printing infrastructure. The need for IT departments to physically configure devices is eliminated, with no interaction necessary on the end-user side to set up iPhones and iPads.
More companies are moving towards the corporate-owned, personally enabled model (COPE), providing employees with mobile devices for personal and business use. Apple’s DEP is recommended to easily roll out these devices. To use this service, an appropriate mobile device management (MDM) solution that supports the service is required. Cortado Mobile Solutions has implemented this feature with the update to Cortado Corporate Server 8.0. Cortado’s product covers not just the mere initial operation of the devices, but also the automatic setup of access to corporate resources.
With the latest version of Cortado Corporate Server, manual MDM configuration of corporate-owned iOS devices is no longer necessary. In just one easy step, administrators can set up a large number of iOS devices, without physically having to be present with the devices. The devices can then be sent, still unopened, to employees on-site or bought by employees in branch offices from an official Apple partner and preconfigured for their setup. Nevertheless, companies keep full control over devices and data. The configuration set in Cortado Corporate Server is automatically transferred to the device. DEP increases security, because the devices always connect with Cortado Corporate Server. This means that if devices are lost or stolen, they are unable to be used by unauthorized persons. This is carried out at the operating level system and cannot be bypassed by users. In addition, DEP is the only way to place devices into Apple’s secure Supervised Mode “over the air”, without the need to physically configure devices.
“Our solution together with DEP allows IT departments to integrate iPhones and iPads in just a few moments into the corporate IT network with minimal effort,” said Armin Lungwitz, CIO at Cortado Mobile Solutions. “Cortado Corporate Server doesn’t cover just the setup of devices, but employees also work more productively right from the beginning, accessing documents and print infrastructure. And all this takes place automatically. Enterprise mobility has never been this easy.
The company has created a short video to show how DEP works: http://corporateserver.cortado.com/dep-video

SEATTLE – June 22, 2016 – PipelineDeals, the leading provider of cloud-based business relationship software for SMBs, marks a decade of playing an essential role in growing business opportunities for MGECOM. The global advertising agency leveraged the CRM’s services and resources to help start, build and continuously grow business relationships. With PipelineDeals, the firm evolved from a 1-person shop working out of a spare bedroom, to a leading agency with a global presence.
When MGECOM opened its doors in 2006, the company could only track a handful of potential sales at a time. PipelineDeals was brought on board to provide everything needed to improve MGECOM’s sales workflow. The firm can now easily manage hundreds of prospects in its sales pipeline at any given time.
“In ten years, we have never considered switching to another CRM because the cost-benefit equation is way too heavily skewed toward the benefits PipelineDeals consistently delivers,” said MGECOM CEO, Matt Enders. “The PipelineDeals team continuously evolves their software with the needs of account-based businesses like mine. I can easily say that PipelineDeals is by far my favorite CRM and a great partner in helping me achieve my business goals.”
With PipelineDeals, MGECOM’s sales team always knows the next best action to take and the priorities they need to focus on to drive business forward. It keeps track of every piece of communication with every prospect in a customized manner, so opportunities are never lost. Additionally, the system is an essential tool in getting new members of the sales team up-and-running within a day thanks to the intuitive nature of PipelineDeals’ interface.
The CRM system also provides easily accessible reporting capabilities for MGECOM’s management team. In just a few clicks on the site, Enders can access both a high-level and an in-depth view of the sales successes, opportunities and challenges in his company. This information provides the data needed to make strong business decisions.
“As we celebrate 10 years of helping businesses grow and achieve their goals, we pride ourselves on providing a CRM system that companies, like MGECOM, actually look forward to using while delivering the results they need,” said JP Werlin, CEO and co-founder of PipelineDeals. “It has been a decade of strong growth for us and our customers. Edgeware Announces Support for the New CMAF Standard
Edgeware today announces support for the Common Media Application Format (CMAF), a media streaming format standardization effort jointly led by Microsoft and Apple to streamline Internet video delivery.
MPEG recently released a statement from its 115th meeting, that it “has reached the first milestone for the CMAF specification.” CMAF defines a common container format for segmented media as well as presentation and media profiles. CMAF segments can be used in environments that support adaptive bitrate streaming of the media segments using HTTP(S) and any presentation description, such as DASH MPD Manifests and Apple HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) Playlists.
At the WWDC 2016, Apple also announced its support for fMP4 segments in HLS on all their platforms (iOS, tvOS, MacOS). This is aligned with the standardization effort.
A common media format embodied in a widely adopted MPEG standard eliminates duplication of engineering efforts and the need to store identical content in slightly different formats, or just-in-time repackaging and encryption. Moreover, it improves overall interoperability and the efficiency of TV CDN’s.
“The same encrypted media segments can now be stored, cached and routed over the networks, regardless of the type of device or choice of browser. CDN’s are less efficient when users request the same media in many different format,” says Dr. Göran Appelquist, CTO at Edgeware. “Up until now you either had to store multiple versions of the same content or provide repackaging and encryption on the fly to reach the heterogeneous landscape of OTT devices. Having this format standardized will mean tremendous savings for our customers particularly in caching, repackaging and storage costs to support current and future playback devices.”
For content owners, this common distribution allows the use of any DRM systems that conform to MPEG Common Encryption for key management and will allow single encoding of TV and video file to be securely streamed to any device with Internet access.
