Alpha Technologies sets goal for SCTE 186 compliant cable/broadband equipment

Alpha’s newest headend powering products meet or exceed standard

HERNDON, VA – Alpha Technologies continues to set the bar as the leader in innovation, quality and reliability in cable/broadband equipment. This week Alpha announced that 100 percent of its headend powering equipment meets or exceeds the requirements of the SCTE 186 standard, and anticipates that all next-generation headend products will do the same.

The announcement was made in conjunction with an SCTE Energy 2020 plenary session in Herndon, Virginia. Energy 2020 is the cable industry’s international program to reduce projected energy costs and consumption by up to 25 percent on a unit basis by the end of the current decade.

“Complying with SCTE 186 will make it easier for us to design, manufacture and test products to meet the needs of our customers,” said John Hewitt, Alpha’s vice president of broadband sales and product management. “In turn, this supports our goal of offering products with the highest reliability that are price competitive.”

SCTE 186 is among the first in a series of standards that are being created by the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) to drive energy management in the cable telecommunications industry. SCTE 186 defines common environmental and sustainability requirements for equipment within mission-critical operations facilities.

“The support of Alpha Technologies and other vendors is essential to expediting the design and manufacture of products that meet SCTE 186 requirements,” said Dan Cooper, vice president of critical infrastructure for Time Warner Cable and chairman of the SCTE Standards Program’s Energy Management Subcommittee. “The availability of equipment that meets the requirements of SCTE 186 and other standards will enable operators to reduce energy costs and consumption without impacting services or features.”

SCTE 186 significantly enhances energy efficiency and increases product reliability by creating environmental, electrical, sustainability and other requirements for the design, manufacture, selection and installation of new equipment.
